Kingfield and the surrounding river valleys are documented here just as the regional narrow-gauge rail era was drawing to a close. The tracks of the Sandy River And Rangeley Lakes RR follow the Carrabassett River and the Sandy River, connecting industrial points like Soule Mill and the village of Strong. This network supported a local economy of timber and milling, visible in landmarks such as the Great Works near New Portland.
