Horseshoe Crater and Melon Mesa define the volcanic high plains of northeastern New Mexico, where the Colfax and Union county lines meet. The small settlement of Kiowa sits at the foot of Kiowa Mesa, a prominent landform overlooking the expansive Kiowa Flats.
