About this map

Knoxville and the surrounding river valleys of East Tennessee are documented here just before the close of the nineteenth century. The convergence of the Holston River and French Broad River to form the Tennessee River serves as the focal point for regional transport, evidenced by numerous river crossings such as Boyds Ferry, Ramseys Ferry, and Underdowns Ferry. To the south, the terrain transitions from the rolling hills of The Slate Knobs into the steep ridges of the Great Smoky Mountains, where isolated settlements and mountain cabins are scattered across the landscape.
