Schantz Airstrip anchors the western edge of this High Plains landscape, where the drainage patterns of E Bijou Cr and its various tributaries define the local geography. The terrain is marked by a series of north-south running gulches and creeks, including Cattle Gulch, Water Gulch, and Sixshooter Gulch, which cut through the high ground. These waterways eventually converge as they move through the township and range divisions of Elbert County.
