About this map

Comanche National Grassland dominates the southeastern reaches of Otero County, preserving a landscape where the traces of western migration are still visible. One of the most significant historical features on this sheet is the Barlow-Sanderson Wagon Road-Trl, an old stage and wagon route that carried travelers and mail through the territory before the railroad era. The terrain is characterized by a series of drainage systems including Anderson Arroyo and McMahon Arroyo, which carve through the plains. In the southern portion of the map, Vogel Canyon offers a concentration of recreational and historical interest, marked by a network of paths such as the Vogel Canyon Trl, Mesa Trl, and Overlook Trl. The intersection of these trails and the ancient wagon road provides a clear picture of how early transit routes were dictated by the natural draws and canyon breaks of the High Plains.
