Cape Sable and the surrounding coastal wetlands form the core of this southern Florida survey, where the terrestrial environment of The Everglades meets the Gulf of Mexico. Within the boundaries of Everglades National Park, the landscape is a complex network of mangrove-lined waterways and interior prairies. The presence of drainage and transport features like the East Cape Canal, Homestead Canal, House Ditch, and Slagle Ditch indicates historical attempts to manage water movement across this low-lying terrain. The hydrography is dominated by large estuarine bodies such as Lake Ingraham and Whitewater Bay, alongside smaller interior waters like Gator Lake and the Cattail Lakes. Raulerson Prairie provides a distinct break from the labyrinthine river systems like the Joe River that thread through the northern portion of the quadrangle.
