McCloud River dominates this portion of the Shasta National Forest, winding through a series of dramatic cascades including Upper Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls. The centerpiece of the landscape is Lake McCloud, a reservoir created along the river canyon, with the settlement of Wyntoon located just north of its narrow northern arm. This area exhibits the complex topography of the Siskiyou and Shasta county line, where numerous seasonal drainages like Tarantula Gulch and Quail Gulch feed into the river system.
