The Ottawa National Forest and Nicolet National Forest meet at the boundary between Vilas County, Wisconsin, and Gogebic County, Michigan, in a landscape defined by glacial kettle lakes and wetlands. The upper reaches of the Wisconsin River snake through the southern portion of the quadrangle, while the northern extent is dominated by the sprawling waters of Duck Lake and the northwestern shores of Lac Vieux Desert. The presence of the Kings Land O' Lakes Airport and a dense network of snowmobile and ski routes, such as the Land O' Lakes Ski Trail, reflect the region's development as a center for forest-based recreation.
