About this map

San Juan River and its northern tributaries, the Animas River and Los Pinos River, define the northwestern corner of this territory at the end of the 19th century. This reconnaissance survey, conducted by W.W. Davis and the Hayden survey, reveals a landscape dominated by a network of massive drainages and geological landmarks within Rio Arriba county. While small settlements like Bloomfield and Largo appear along the riverbanks, much of the map documents the intricate maze of deep canyons including Gobernador Canyon, Canyon Blanco, and the Largo canyon system. To the south, prominent natural features like Angels Peak and the isolated heights of El Huerfanito and El Huerfano serve as crucial navigational points. Further east, the high plateau features the Stinking Lakes and Horse Lake, showing the natural hydrology before modern water management significantly altered these seasonal basins.
