Camino Del Diablo cuts across this arid landscape, tracing a historic path through the Cabeza Prieta Wilderness and National Wildlife Refuge. The international border between the United States of America and Mexico bisects the quadrangle, where the arid Desierto de Altar meets the volcanic deposits of the Pinacate Lava and the drifting Pinta Sands.

Remote land-use patterns are defined by the transition from the Barry M Goldwater Air Force Range into the protected wilderness. Rare points of human presence in this desert corridor appear at Los Vidrios south of the border, while the expansive basin of Las Playas and the rugged O'Neill Hills dominate the topography.
