The Santa Fe Trl cuts across the western portion of this High Plains landscape, following a historic passage through the broken terrain of Chico Hills. This area of Union and Colfax counties is defined by its intermittent water sources and dramatic landforms, including the prominent elevated flats of Las Mesetas. The drainage network is centered on Lawrence Arroyo, which flows south toward Holkeo Cr, while the eastern edge is marked by the course of Palo Blanco Cr.
