Black Rock Desert dominates the southern reaches of this landscape, its expansive alkaline flats meeting the base of rising highlands in Northern Nevada. The northern terrain is defined by the sharp elevations of The Mesa, where seasonal drainages like Leonard Cr and Sentinel Cr carve through the basin and range geology. Near the high ridges of the northeast corner, Montero Reservoir provides a critical water source in an otherwise arid environment. This 2021 study illustrates a sparsely populated region where infrastructure is limited to long-standing corridors such as Leonard Creek Rd. The drainage patterns, including Bartlett Cr in the southwest, reveal how water management and natural runoff dictate the land use in this part of Humboldt County, primarily supporting remote ranching and seasonal grazing operations.
