The high desert borderland of Oregon and Nevada is defined here by the intersection of Lake and Washoe counties. This remote basin-and-range landscape is primarily marked by drainage networks and seasonal water sources essential for cattle ranching, such as Coleman Reservoir and Glenco Spring. The terrain transitions from the elevations of Mosquito Mountain down into the broad expanses of Mosquito Valley and Coleman Valley. A network of unpaved tracks, including Coleman Ranch Rd and Barrel Springs Rd, provides the only access through these canyons. This 2018 survey illustrates the persistent isolation of the region, where the primary human footprint remains the basic infrastructure of water management and rural ranching roads like Separate Rd.
