Goose Creek winds through this expanse of the Nebraska Sandhills, a landscape defined more by family-owned ranching operations than by formal townships. In the mid-1980s, the isolated character of Cherry County is evident in the sparse distribution of landmarks such as N Hanna Ranch, the Hanna Ranch, and Sears Ranch. The terrain is marked by a complex network of wetlands and seasonal water features, notably the Reiser-Shockley Swamp in the northwest. To the south, the Loup River cuts across the corner of the sheet, providing a primary drainage for the area. This provisional survey provides a precise look at the ranch boundaries and water systems that sustained life and industry in this remote section of the Great Plains during the late twentieth century.
