First Connecticut Lake dominates the northwest corner of this Coos County landscape, marking the headwaters where the Connecticut River begins its long journey south. The terrain is defined by high-elevation peaks and ridges, most notably Magalloway Mtn and the prominent Diamond Ridge. A dense network of forest roads, including Smith Brook Rd and Magalloway Rd, provides access through the timberlands, which are carved by numerous steep drainages.
