Mattox Draw defines the southern drainage of this High Plains landscape in western Kansas. The terrain is characterized by a precise, mile-square grid of local thoroughfares, including Co Road K, Co Road L, and Co Road M, which facilitate the region's agricultural layout. This network of section-line roads, such as Co Rd-4 and Co Rd-10, illustrates the enduring influence of the Public Land Survey System on the modern geography of Kearny County. Apart from the natural intermittent flow of the draw, the landscape is largely dominated by the large-scale spatial organization required for prairie farming and ranching in the early twenty-first century.
