McDowell and Liberty serve as the primary hubs in this Highland County landscape, where the Bullpasture River and Cowpasture River carve distinct valleys through the Allegheny Mountains. The settlement at McDowell sits at the junction of the Bullpasture River and Crab Run, shadowed by the heights of Sittlington Hill and Cedar Knob.
