Melstrand and Van Meer anchor this portion of the Upper Peninsula, where the landscape transitions between protected wilderness and managed forest lands. The northern section is dominated by the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where the Mosquito River and Chapel Creek flow toward the Lake Superior coast. Further south, the Hiawatha National Forest encompasses a network of wetlands and minor waterways, including Creighton Marsh and the slow-moving Stony Creek.
