The industrial and transportation corridor of central Connecticut is sharply defined by the Quinnipac River and the basalt ridges of the Hanging Hills. During this late nineteenth-century period, the landscape transitioned from the dense manufacturing centers of Meriden and Bristol into the sprawling farmland of Southington and Plymouth. The map documents a highly developed rail network, including the New York New Haven & Hartford Railroad and the New York & New England Railroad, which facilitated the growth of smaller satellite communities like Plantsville and Forestville.
