About this map

Merritt and the surrounding township lands of Missaukee County appear here as a landscape of rural intersections and river bends. The community of Star City anchors the northwest corner near its namesake Star City Cem, while the southern reaches are defined by Butterfield and the Butterfield Cem located along E Kelly Rd. The hydrography of the region is dominated by the West Branch Muskegon River and the main Muskegon River, which wind through the eastern half of the quadrangle. These waterways, along with Butterfield Creek, reflect the importance of natural drainage to the local agricultural and timber history. A dense grid of county roads, such as E Houghton Lake Rd and S Merritt Rd, connects the scattered farmsteads and small settlements that have persisted in this corner of the state since the late 19th century.
