San Isidro Valley and the surrounding high desert plateaus define this region of Sandoval County, where the high elevations of the Santa Fe National Forest overlook a complex system of seasonal drainages. The landscape is dominated by massive geological formations including Mesa Portales, Mesa de Cuba, and Mesa Chijuilla. Human presence is sparse, centered around the settlement of Johnson and a network of essential water sources such as Johnson Spring, Smoky Spring, and Moreno Spring.
