Mesita Americana characterizes this high-desert terrain in McKinley County, where the landscape is defined by a series of intermittent watercourses and ranching outposts. This 2010 survey shows a network of arroyos, including the North Fork Arroyo Chico, Arroyo Lucero, and Arroyo Alfredo Padilla, which drain the open range toward the eastern edge of the quadrangle. Human presence is concentrated around isolated points such as Ball Ranch, Mesita Camp, and the eponymous Mesita Americana settlement area.
