Mount Curwood rises above a wilderness defined by its logging history and the transition between the L'Anse State Forest and the Baraga State Forest. In the mid-1950s, this region of the Upper Peninsula was dotted with remote outposts such as Elmblad Camp, Sensenbrenner-Seldon Camp, and Snyder Camp, reflecting the ongoing timber and resource extraction activities of the era. To the south, the village of Michigamme serves as a hub near the shores of Lake Michigamme, where the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic railroad provided a vital link for the local mining and lumber industries.
