Ashland and the expanding footprint of the Columbia Regional Airport anchor the western reaches of this mid-Missouri landscape. The terrain is defined by the winding course of Cedar Cr, which serves as a natural boundary between Boone and Callaway counties. This eastern borderland is significantly more rugged, characterized by topographic landmarks such as the Devils Backbone and Mill Site Bluff, where the creek has carved deep into the limestone. Much of this creek-side territory is preserved within the Mark Twain National Forest.
