Gemmell and the small settlement at Pinetop anchor this survey of the northern Minnesota wetlands. The landscape is defined by its complex hydrology, where the Lost River flows through the northwestern corner and Caldwell Brook meanders through the central and eastern reaches. Cultural history is centered near the crossroads of Us-71 and Town Road 32, where the Oak Hill Gemmell Cem and Clear Lake are located. Further south, the meandering course of Pancake Cr winds through a terrain etched with unpaved routes like Ut-377 and Ut-378, indicating a region dominated by timber and peatland access roads rather than dense residential development.
