Mockingbird Gap serves as a critical geographic passage between the Mockingbird Mountains and the northern extent of the San Andres Mountains Little Burro. This high-desert landscape in Socorro County is defined by its scarce water sources, essential for survival in the arid terrain, as evidenced by Mockingbird Spring and several named livestock watering points including Babers Tank, Smith Tank, and Mountain Tanks. The area is part of a restricted military corridor, indicated by the network of White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) infrastructure such as WSMR P Route 7 and WSMR P Route 12. Further north, the topography shifts toward Oscura Gap and the Little Burro Mountains, where the intermittent drainage of Salt Cr cuts through the eastern slopes, illustrating the isolation and specialized land use of this New Mexico interior.
