Monadnock Mountain rises as a prominent high point in this northern New England borderland, where the Connecticut River serves as the dividing line between New Hampshire and Vermont. Local history is deeply etched into the hillsides through a dense concentration of burial grounds, such as the Old Canaan Hill Cem, the Morrison-Schoolhouse Cem, and the South Canaan Church Cem. The mapping of these remote upland routes, including Canaan Hill Rd and Todd Hill Rd, reveals a legacy of mountain farming and timbering.
