Whirlwind Mine sits near the northern boundary of this San Juan County landscape, positioned just south of the convoluted shoreline of Lake Powell. The terrain is defined by the massive vertical relief of Monitor Butte and Monitor Mesa, which tower over the surrounding desert floor. Transportation through this isolated region relies on two primary arteries: Piaute Farms Rd, which runs north-south toward the water, and Indian Rte 5325, which traverses the southwestern quadrant. The drainage of Piute Farms Wash cuts through the northeast, leading toward the reservoir. This map documents a remote section of the Colorado Plateau, where industrial mining interests and modern infrastructure meet the traditional geographic landmarks of the Navajo Nation lands.
