Monson and Blanchard anchor this portion of Piscataquis County, where the southern edge of the Maine North Woods transitions from historic mill settlements to the highlands of the Appalachian trail. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the center of the terrain, crossing over Doughty Hill and Buck Hill before descending toward the Piscataquis River. In the northwest, Shirley Mills reflects the area's timber and water-power roots at the edge of Shirley Pond. Local history and genealogy are well-represented by several burial sites, including Churchyard Cem near the town center and Glenwood Cem and New Blanchard Cem near the river. The landscape is defined by its diverse water bodies, ranging from the large Lake Hebron with its distinct Whiting Cove and Towne Cove to the smaller, high-elevation Spectacle Ponds and McLellan Pond. Timber-related transport is still evident in the naming of roads such as B&A Railroad Rd N, marking the paths of former rail lines.
