About this map

The Red River winds through a complex landscape of brakes, bayous, and old river channels in this 1940s survey of the Louisiana interior. Centered on the town of Montgomery, the map illustrates a region defined by its reliance on the river and the emerging railroad networks of the Louisiana and Arkansas Railway and the Texas and Pacific RR. The alluvial plain is densely populated with community landmarks, including the St Augustines Sch and Cloutierville, home to a concentrated cluster of small settlements like Derry and Magnolia. To the east, the terrain rises into the timbered uplands of the Kisatchie National Forest, where smaller settlements like Verda and New Verda are connected by forest roads. This map captures the local transition from river-based commerce to rail-centered agriculture and forestry, marked by numerous rural churches and family-named schools such as Hicks Sch and Rochal Sch.
