The Arizona-Sonora border defines the character of this desert landscape, where the United States and Mexico meet along a corridor of remote conservation lands and military training grounds. In the northern reaches, the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and the Barry M Goldwater Air Force Range dominate the terrain, protected by the Cabeza Prieta Wilderness. The historic Camino del Diablo cuts through the Pinacate Valley near Monument Bluff, following a path used for centuries by travelers crossing these arid lands.
