The Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849 traverses the northeastern corner of this high-desert and mountain landscape, marking a historic corridor through Mason Valley. The topography is defined by the sharp rise of the Sawtooth Range and the high elevations of Monument Peak and Garnet Peak. This 2012 survey illustrates the area's transition from the desert floor near Campbell Ranch and the Rancho Vallecito Airport to the alpine meadows of the Cleveland National Forest.
