The high plateau of Monitor Mesa and the surrounding drainage basins of the Uncompahgre National Forest define this landscape. A rugged network of pack trails and forest roads, such as the Roubideau Trail and Copper King Road, connect a series of seasonal livestock stations including Beach Cow Camp and Boyden Cow Camp. These camps, along with the Mesa Guard Sta, illustrate the area's continued use for national forest management and ranching.
