The Continental Divide crests through the center of this high-altitude landscape within the Routt National Forest, forming a natural boundary between Routt and Jackson counties. This area of the Park Range is characterized by a dense network of glacial basins and alpine lakes, including the prominent Mt Ethel and Lost Ranger Peak. The high-country hydrology is remarkably intricate, with waters flowing from Lake Katherine and Three Island Lake in the north down toward Big Creek Lake and Lake Elbert in the south.
