Rio Grande National Forest defines this high-elevation landscape, where the headwaters of the S Fork Rio Grande are fed by numerous alpine streams. The hydrologic system is prominent, anchored by the Big Meadows Reservoir and high-altitude water bodies such as Shaw Lake, Pass Cr Lake, and the twin Spruce Lake Number 1 and Spruce Lake Number 2. The peaks of Mount Hope, Metroz Mountain, and Heart Mountain dominate the terrain, creating a complex series of ridges and valleys that dictate the modern transit routes.
