Rio Grande National Forest and San Juan National Forest meet in this high-altitude landscape of the San Juan Mountains. The terrain is defined by prominent peaks and ridges including Mt Hope, Metroz Mtn, and Table Mtn, with the striking geological formation known as the Stair Steps marking the northwestern portion of the sheet. Water management and drainage are central to the area's character, anchored by Big Meadows Reservoir and Hunter Reservoir.
