Craters Of The Moon National Monument dominates the western portion of this landscape, where the basaltic flows of the Snake River Plain meet the sagebrush steppe. The terrain is defined by the geological fractures of the Great Rift, a series of deep fissures and volcanic vents that shaped the regional topography. Among these volcanic features, the prominent Mule Butte rises above the surrounding flats, while the Bear Trap Lava Tube provides evidence of ancient subterranean volcanic activity.
