New River Mesa dominates this section of the Tonto National Forest north of Cave Creek and Scottsdale. The landscape is a complex network of high desert drainage and arid peaks, where seasonal water sources like Robbers Roost Spring and Flemming Spring have long supported human passage through the canyon lands. The geography is characterized by distinct volcanic and sedimentary formations including Skull Mesa, Black Mesa, and the prominent Sugarloaf Mtn.
