Uncompahgre National Forest dominates the central and southern portions of this landscape, where the high mesas and deep drainages of San Miguel County meet. The land is defined by a complex system of water management, evident in the network of ditches and laterals such as Japanese Ditch, S Lateral Ditch, and the Lilylands Canal. These systems connect various highland catchments like Burn Canyon Reservoir and Gurley Reservoir to the surrounding agricultural flats.
