Grafton Notch serves as a dramatic pass through the Mahoosuc Range, where the Bear River has carved significant geological formations including the Moose Cave Gorge and Screw Auger Falls Gorge. The landscape is dominated by high peaks and steep glens, notably Old Speck Mtn and Baldpate Mtn, which are connected by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. This modern survey reveals the preservation of this wilderness corridor, highlighting the isolation of Speck Pond and the legendary boulder-choked passage of Mahoosuc Notch. Near the southern edge of the sheet, the small settlement of Ketchum sits at the junction of the Sunday River and Bull Branch, marking one of the few points of habitation in an otherwise formidable alpine environment. The presence of Lightning Ledge and Table Rock indicates the prominence of rocky overlooks that define the region’s topography.
