Oreana Peak and the high summits of the Pine Nut Mountains dominate the western horizon of this high-desert landscape on the border of Douglas and Lyon counties. The eastern reaches descend into the fertile agricultural lands of Smith Valley, where the community of Simpson sits near a network of irrigation works including Colony Ditch and the Plymouth Canal. This water system supports the ranching and farming economy that has long defined the region south of the West Walker River.

In the southeast corner, the town of Wellington marks the gateway to the Toiyabe National Forest and the winding Hoye Canyon. Aviation and local transport are represented by Farias Wheel Airport and a grid of rural routes such as Upper Colony Rd and Red Canyon Rd. The terrain is deeply incised by numerous drainages, including Red Canyon, Burbank Canyon, and Minnehaha Canyon, which define the rugged transition from the mountain peaks to the valley floor.
