Packwood serves as the primary hub for this portion of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, situated where Skate Creek and Hall Creek meet the Cowlitz River. The town's layout includes the Packwood Airport and a small residential grid featuring local roads like Alpine Dr and Willame St W. The surrounding topography is dominated by dramatic elevation changes, from the flat valley of the Big Bottom to the high crests of Skyo Mtn and Hall Ridge. South of the river, the landscape becomes increasingly remote, marked by unique geological features like Goat Dike and the high-altitude Burton Meadows. A network of wilderness paths, including the South Point Lookout Trail and Pompey Peak Trail, provides access to the peaks overlooking the Smith Creek and Deception Creek drainages.
