Mission San Antonio de Pala and its accompanying Mission San Antonio de Pala Cem stand as significant cultural anchors in this northern San Diego County landscape. The settlement of Pala sits at the foot of Pala Mtn, where the San Luis Rey River is joined by multiple tributaries like Pala Cr and Magee Cr. The terrain is defined by dramatic relief, ranging from the depths of Couser Canyon to the heights of Weaver Mtn. To the east, the community of Pauma Valley is marked by agricultural activity and aviation landmarks including the Pauma Valley Air Park. Further south, the Blackinton Airport serves the area near Keys Canyon. Large portions of the northeast are protected within the Cleveland National Forest, where the topography rises sharply toward Marion Canyon.
