Palomino Buttes rise above a landscape defined by volcanic landforms and an intricate network of seasonal water catchments in this high-desert portion of Harney County. The topography is dominated by the Palomino Rim, where the Palomino Grade marks a distinct elevation change leading toward the broader Warm Springs Valley. In this arid environment, water management is the primary human imprint on the land, evidenced by the numerous reservoirs such as Snow Storm Reservoir, Bunch Grass Reservoir, and Fay Canyon Reservoir.
