About this map

Cow Butte (Be-Aushi) rises as a central landmark in this remote section of the Navajo Indian Reservation, just south of the Utah-Arizona border. The landscape is defined by the drainage networks of Tistah Wash, Dry Farm Wash, and Todeschi Wash, which cut through the high desert terrain leading toward the northern slopes of the Carrizo Mountains. This preliminary 1950s survey documents a pastoral environment where water management was essential for survival and livestock, as evidenced by a series of engineered structures such as Dam 5476, Dam 5472, and a isolated Windmill. The cartography also marks the transition between San Juan and Apache counties, capturing the region's physical geography before later developments. The intricate contour lines illustrate the complex erosion patterns and rising elevations that characterize this corner of the Four Corners region.
