Paydown sits within a deeply dissected portion of Maries County, where the Gasconade River once carved the winding valleys that now define the region's geography. The settlement at Bend reflects the historical importance of river meanders in local navigation and land division. Much of the land is accessed via a network of rural routes such as Maries Road 340, which bridge the gap between the high ridges and the creek bottoms. Cultural sites are prevalent throughout the landscape, including the notable Indian House Mounds and Paradise Valley.
