Penfield sits at the convergence of several mountain runs and ridges along the boundary between Elk and Clearfield counties. The community is defined by its position at the fork of Wilson Run and Bennett Br Sinnemahoning Cr, with several family and community burial grounds such as Penfield Cem and Bundy Cem situated nearby. The landscape is deeply carved by drainage systems including Horning Hollow, Erick Hollow, and Lamb Hollow, which descend from high points like Mount Pleasant and Gobbler Knob. Smaller settlements like Winterburn, Hollywood, and Tyler follow the contours of the valley floors, linked by a network of rural roads that often follow the meandering paths of the creeks. Further south, the terrain levels slightly near Anderson Creek, where the local geography is influenced by the prominent ridge known as The Hogback.
