Petros and the community of Coalfield occupy the valley floors of this portion of the Cumberland Mountains, where the terrain is defined by the Tennessee Valley Divide and the looming heights of Frozen Head Mtn. The landscape is a complex of steep ridges and hollows, including Big Mountain Hollow and Sawmill Hollow, which have historically dictated the placement of settlements and transport routes. Numerous family burial grounds and small community cemeteries are scattered throughout the hills, such as Brasel Cem, Stephens Cem, and the Thornton Cem, providing a dense record of the area's genealogical history. The drainage network is equally intricate, with the Little Emory River and its various forks, such as Right Fork Little Emory River, carving through the southern portion of the map near the Morgan County and Roane County boundary.
