Lothrop sits along the Clark Fork river corridor at the northern edge of this Montana landscape, where the valley floor meets the rising peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains. The terrain transitions from the river's lowlands into the high country of the Lolo National Forest, dominated by the prominent summit of Petty Mtn and the rugged Grave Creek Range to the southeast.
