Chippewa National Forest defines this lake-studded portion of Itasca County, where the massive northern shoreline of Lake Winnibigoshish meets a complex network of smaller water bodies and wetlands. The landscape is dominated by the Pigeon River system, including the Pigeon River Impoundment and Pigeon Dam Lake, which reflect the managed water levels critical to the region's ecology. Near the settlement of Squaw Lake, local history is preserved at the Squaw Lake Cem, the South Round Lake Cem, and the uniquely named Peter and Eva Niska Memorial Cem.
